And the warm Central Otago welcome that makes it unforgettable.
152 kilometres of gold-rush history, schist gorges, sweeping tussock plains and handsome trail towns - all on gentle, converted railway formation that any cyclist can ride.
The Otago Central Rail Trail follows 152 kilometres of converted railway formation through one of New Zealand's most distinctive landscapes. Built in the late 1800s to serve the Central Otago goldfields, the line was transformed into a cycling trail in the 1990s - and has since become one of the country's most celebrated multi-day rides.
"Come and experience one of the world's great rail trails - and the warm Central Otago welcome that makes it unforgettable."
What makes the Otago Rail Trail special isn't just the scenery - though the schist gorges, golden tussock plains, river valleys and wide Maniototo skies are genuinely breathtaking. It's the towns. Alexandra, Ophir, Omakau, Ranfurly - each one carries its own character, history and hospitality. You stop for lunch, chat with locals, find a cold beer at a country pub that hasn't changed in fifty years.
The trail is rated Grade 1, the easiest cycling grade in New Zealand. Gentle, consistent gradients make it accessible for families, older riders and those new to multi-day cycling. You don't need to be a cyclist to love it - you just need to want a good adventure.
Central Otago has some of New Zealand's most dramatic seasonal character. Each time of year brings a different version of the trail.
The poplars and willows turn gold and rust. Cooler riding temperatures, quieter trails, and the landscape at its most painterly. Many experienced riders' favourite time.
The hills green up after winter, blossom fills the orchards around Clyde, and the long days ahead feel full of promise. Shoulder season means quieter tracks and good value.
Long sunny days, warmth, and the full buzz of the trail at peak season. Book accommodation early. January can be very hot - start riding early in the day.
Cold, occasionally frosty, and some sections can be icy. Not recommended for most riders. A handful of hardy cyclists relish the solitude, but this is the exception.
The Central Otago welcome isn't one place - it's a thread running through every town from Clyde to Middlemarch. Each stop has its own history, its own hospitality, its own reason to linger.
A handsome gold-rush town on the Clutha River. Trail start, bike hire base, and gateway to Central Otago.
The largest town on the trail. Excellent accommodation, cafés, and some of Central Otago's finest pinot noir nearby.
New Zealand's most intact gold-era village. Quiet, beautiful, and frozen in time in the best possible way.
A key accommodation stop if you're riding a brisk 3 day itinerary.
One of the most fascinating stops on the trail, home to the historic Hayes Engineering Works and Gilchrist's Store.
The famous Green goods shed that Graeme Syndney painted sits here. A gateway to Naseby.
Off the trail but a key destination for those seeking a historic mining town and curling and luge riding at the Maniototo Adventure Park.
The Art Deco capital of the Maniototo. Superb cafés, accommodation, and an easy-going country hospitality. A Naseby gateway town
A beloved country pub and the historic Green bridge. The beer tastes especially good here.
Your last refreshment stop at the historic The Central Otago Hydeaway Cafe before reaching Middlemarch.
Trail end, with views to the Rock and Pillar Range. Gateway to the Taieri Gorge Railway or transport to Dunedin or Queenstown.

"Very happy with all aspects of our 4 day bike ride on the Central Otago Rail Trail. The company booked our accommodation and transfers from each end of the trail. Not a hitch, and very responsive throughout the planning process. Good e-bikes; saddle bags provided were big enough for all our luggage. Highly recommended."
"Fantastic service, brilliant bike riding experience. Bikes were great - very comfortable for all trail surfaces. Service was outstanding from first enquiry email to drop off at airport. We took advantage of bike hire, luggage transfer, shuttles and accommodation. Detailed agenda and tips provided, along with a thorough trail briefing. Thank you Shebikeshebikes Team!"
"Service was again excellent - shuttle drivers were great, on time, adaptable and very helpful. The bikes (Superior E-bikes) were brilliant, plenty of power and comfort. Mechanic at Clyde made a couple of overnight tweaks to make day 2 even better. Overall 5 star service from a 5 star team."
