About the Trail

A Journey Through Central Otago's Soul

The Otago Central Rail Trail follows 152 kilometres of converted railway formation through one of New Zealand's most distinctive landscapes. Built in the late 1800s to serve the Central Otago goldfields, the line was transformed into a cycling trail in the 1990s - and has since become one of the country's most celebrated multi-day rides.

"Come and experience one of the world's great rail trails - and the warm Central Otago welcome that makes it unforgettable."

What makes the Otago Rail Trail special isn't just the scenery - though the schist gorges, golden tussock plains, river valleys and wide Maniototo skies are genuinely breathtaking. It's the towns. Alexandra, Ophir, Omakau, Ranfurly - each one carries its own character, history and hospitality. You stop for lunch, chat with locals, find a cold beer at a country pub that hasn't changed in fifty years.

The trail is rated Grade 1, the easiest cycling grade in New Zealand. Gentle, consistent gradients make it accessible for families, older riders and those new to multi-day cycling. You don't need to be a cyclist to love it - you just need to want a good adventure.

When to Go

Central Otago Through the Seasons

Central Otago has some of New Zealand's most dramatic seasonal character. Each time of year brings a different version of the trail.

Peak season
Autumn
March – April

The poplars and willows turn gold and rust. Cooler riding temperatures, quieter trails, and the landscape at its most painterly. Many experienced riders' favourite time.

Best season
Spring
October – November

The hills green up after winter, blossom fills the orchards around Clyde, and the long days ahead feel full of promise. Shoulder season means quieter tracks and good value.

Best season
Summer
December – February

Long sunny days, warmth, and the full buzz of the trail at peak season. Book accommodation early. January can be very hot - start riding early in the day.

Day trip season
Winter
June – August

Cold, occasionally frosty, and some sections can be icy. Not recommended for most riders. A handful of hardy cyclists relish the solitude, but this is the exception.

Few rail trails in the world combine all the elements the Otago Central Rail Trail does - 152 km of dramatic, varied landscape, genuine gold-rush heritage, a string of characterful towns with real local hospitality, gentle gradients that welcome all cyclists, and a level of infrastructure (luggage transfer, bike hire, shuttle transport) that makes it genuinely easy to enjoy. It's one of only 22 New Zealand Great Rides and consistently attracts riders from across the world.
The Otago Central Rail Trail is 152 km from end to end, running between Clyde in the west and Middlemarch in the east. Most riders travel west to east (Clyde to Middlemarch) following the original direction of travel and taking advantage of the prevailing nor'west wind.
Yes - and this is one of the trail's great strengths. Because it follows converted railway formation, the gradients are consistently gentle throughout. Grade 1 (Easiest) is the lowest difficulty rating on New Zealand's cycling network. Families with children, riders in their 70s and 80s, and complete beginners ride it comfortably. We'd recommend e-bikes for those wanting extra assurance on longer day stages.
October through April is the recommended riding window. Autumn (March–April) is many riders' favourite - cooler temperatures, golden foliage and quieter trails. Spring (October–November) is fresh and beautiful with blossoms around Clyde. Summer (December–February) is peak season - warm and long-daylight days but book accommodation well ahead and expect company on the trail. Avoid July and August when Central Otago can be bitterly cold and the trail icy.
You can ride independently - the trail is public and accommodation is bookable directly. However, the logistics of getting bikes and yourselves back from Middlemarch to Clyde trip up most independent riders. A package from SheBikesHeBikes covers bike hire, daily luggage transfers, passenger return transport and a professional trip-notes app - removing the complexity and letting you focus entirely on the experience.
This is one of the trail's most common planning headaches for independent riders. Clyde and Middlemarch are roughly 200 km apart by road, on opposite sides of the Maniototo. All SheBikesHeBikes packages include passenger transport from Middlemarch - your bikes and bags come with you, and you're returned to Clyde (or your vehicle) without any of the car shuttle drama.
Yes. The Otago Central Rail Trail is one of New Zealand's 22 designated Great Rides - the country's network of premier multi-day cycling trails. It was among the first trails to receive Great Ride status and remains one of the most visited in the network, drawing riders from across New Zealand and around the world each season.
